We start with conflicting geneolgies
one source, http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~villandra/MomF/f25.html#f2178
says William Eliott born about 1450
to Thomas Eliot Born: Abt 1480
to Simon Eliot Born: Abt 1520
to Bennett Elliott(1573-1621)

the other source http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/ELLIOTT/2002-04/1018458298
says says William Elliott born about 1450
to John "the elder"ELLIOTT Born in 1516
to Edward Elliott (1546-1595)
to Bennett Elliott(1573-1621)

so they both merge at bennett Elliot

William Eliott born about 1450 of Cottered, Hertfordshire, England
Died: Bef 1529
married Elizabeth Wilson

They had the following children:
1- Thomas Eliot Born: Abt 1480 - of Widford, Hertfordshire, England
Died: Bef 13 Nov 1554 - Widford, Hertfordshire, England
married Margaret ?
2- George Eliot of Stortford
Died: 1648-1649 - Bishops Stortford
Buried under a black stone with a brass plate,
in the southwest corner of St. Michael's church, Bishop's Stortford, Hertfordshire
married Eleanor who died in 1540
3- John "the elder"ELLIOTT. Born in 1516 in Bishops Stratford, Hartford, England. In
1546 when John was 30, he married Margaret SHEPPY, in Bishops Stratford,
Hartford, England.
4- Robert Eliot of Hunsdon

Some of William's children and grandchildren attained the rank of gentry and claimed a coat of arms.
In the 16th century visitations they apparently adopted for themselves Welsh aristocratic ancestry,
and a minor variation of the coat of arms of a Welsh aristocratic family.
IN actuality, Eliot's were established in the immediate area by 1300.
In 1307 a Walter Eliot of WEston, 2 miles west of Cottered, Hertfordshire, paid tax.
In 1428, a document referred to land in Little Hadham that formerly belonged (sic) to William Elyot.
So clearly they were not in Wales.
William Eliot of Cottered, Herts, married Elizabeth Wilson,
daughter of the balilff of Cottered. She remarried Thomas Green.
But in a slightly later visitation William had morphed into Thomas Eliot of HOnsdon,
son of Richard Eliot of Devonshire, gentleman,
son of Thomas Eliot, Master of Chancery, 149_, born in Wales.
No telling how much of this is invented.
Inventions and fabrications were a problem in the Visitations,
which were intended among other things to establish who had the right to claim the rank of gentry.
It was based on what families told the King's representatives.
Several of John Eliot Sr.'s grandchildren and great grandchildren did attain the rank of gentry, one as a mercer in London.
William Wyman Fiske confusingly and vaguely attempts to argue that actually,
Thomas and William were the same people and the second pedigree is reality.
I don't think so.
July 1953 article in NEHGR identifies William as "Thomas of Cottered".
A Richard Elyot is seargant at law, in lawsuit over messuages and land in Watford in 1504.
Pedigree in NEHGR, 28, p 144, shows him living in 1491, father of Thomas of Cottered aka William.
A feofee. Albeit evidently doing well. Eliots apparently "rose through the law".
Richard must be the one identified on the pedigree as "Richard Eliot of Devonshire, Gent",
son of Thomas Eliot Master of Chancery b Wales.
Apparently Richard did exist, just not a real association with Devonshire and his father not a master of the Chancery from Wales. 1953 NEHGR article consists of entries in the law courts in the area concerning numerous lawsuits
between Eliots the sons and grandsons of Thomas aka William, and other relations over numerous lands, messuages, etc.
They owned alot of land.

Thomas Eliot Born: Abt 1480 - of Widford, Hertfordshire, England
Died: Bef 13 Nov 1554 - Widford, Hertfordshire, England
married Margaret ?

Notes for Thomas Eliot Born: Abt 1480 1551 Will probated 13 Nov 1554.
Left his son Thomas Elyot and his heirs his house and all his lands, being freehold,
situate and lying in the parish of Widford and in the parish of Ware.
In the absence of male heirs these lands would pass next to son John.
His wife must have died before him.
His will bequeaths to the reparation of the church of Wydford, in which yard he is to be buried,
2000 tiles to be laid in the church yard by his son Thomas at his expense.
He wills six shillings eight pence to the poor mens chest.
He wills a cupboard and table in the hall, four chests, and four bedsteads from his house, to remain there.
He wills his house and all his lands, being freehold, located in parishes of Widford and Ware

They had the following children:
1- Simon Eliot Born: Abt 1520
Died: Bef 9 Apr 1562
married Jane ?
remarried Katherine Haynes
2- Thomas Eliot of Widford
Died: 1557 - Widford
married Margaret
3- John Eliot of Olives
Died: 1585 - olives

Simon Eliot Born: Abt 1520
Died: Bef 9 Apr 1562
married Jane ?
remarried Katherine Haynes

Notes for Simon

Lived in Little Hadham, Herts. Left a will in 1562.
Left his son a three acre rental property held of the lord of the manor of Much Hadham, called Lechitthilles, with buildings.
Chain of wills. Thomas of Widford, will dated 1551, left land to three sons.
John of Olives, will 1585, had sons Henry, Wm, Philip, Fernando, and Marjorie. Son Simon.
Son Thomas of Widford, property in Hunsdon, Ware, Widford,
his father's will specified it couldn't be sold, wife Margery, died 1557/8.
Son George, who died in 1565, Thomas, Blyth, Winifred, Thomas ended up with the property.
Rolls of the Manor of Much Hadham prooved Simon Wliot, third son of Thomas Eliot who died 1551, was Bennet's father.
To this court is certified by the steward the presentee through the homage and is enrolled as follows..
Memorandum that the third day of May in the 22nd year (1580) of our Lady Elizabeth now queen, etc.,
John Adams and Jane his wife and Benedict Elliot son of the same Jane
came before the steward of the manor aforesaid in the absence of the court
and Jane herself by the steward aforesaid then and there sole examined and confessed.
And surrendered into the hands of the lord by estimation there acres whether more or less parcel of the tenements of the lord
just as lying within the demesne aforesaid, that is to say,
bewteen the lands lately Thomas Elliott by right of his wife on the southern side
and the lands latley Robert Patener on the northern side...
to which the same Jane was admitted for her life as in the free-bench of the same Jane after the death of Simon Elliott
her certain husband as shown in the court with a view held there on Thrusday next before hock day,
that is to say the ninth day of April the fourth year (1562) of the reign of our Lady Elizabeth...
and that the said premises descend to Benedict by right of inheritance after the death of the said Simon his father
is shown by the rolls of court with view upon the said fourth year wherefore at this court he was admitted etc.
Margin: Fine 18d paid.
The Court Roll identifies Bennet's parents as Simon Eliot, deceased by April 1562, and his widow Jane, now wife of John Adams.
The only Simon eliot so far identified in any of the records for this family
was the son of Thomas Eliot, the 1551 testator.
Only Bennet or Benedict Eliot found to date was Bennet Eliot of Nazeing, husband of Lettice (Alger) Eliot.
to have appeared before the court by 3 May 1580,
Bennet would presumably have been at least age 21,
consistent with his having been born by 1562 (as his father died in April of that year).
Wile Bennet's only known marriage was in 1598 when he was at least in his late 30's
he could have had a prior marriage that hasn't been discovered.
Coincidences between Philip Elipt of Hunsdon. and Bennet Elliot. Each named a daughter Lydia.
Only Bennet's son John and Philip's son James took degrees from Cambridge adn entered the clergy.

Elliott family from England in 1516 to Texas 2000

John ELLIOTT. Born in 1516 in Bishops Stratford, Hartford, England. In
1546 when John was 30, he married Margaret SHEPPY, in Bishops Stratford,
Hartford, England.

Notes for John Eliot from http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~villandra/MomF/f25.html#f2178 Descendants became wealthy mercers in London and claimed Welsh aristocratic descent.
"The name of his first wife is unkown;her burial is noted in the churchwardens'
accounts for Bishops Stortford for 1521-22 as 16d received of "John Elyat for the wast of the torchis at the buryall of his wyfe".
According to the Essex visitations, unforunately reiddled with inaccuracies,
John Eliot first married Elizabeth Grave and second Margaret Shepey.
The name of his first wife in the visitations is probably incorrect.
In his will John Eliot left 20d to "every child that Richard Grave or his wife hath now living...
saving to John Elyott her eldest son, unto whom I give and bequeath twenty shillings."
It is porbable that Richard Graves wife was the widow of an unidentified older son of John Eliot.,
especially as John's will recognizes her family in the mist of bequests to his other children."
(So why would he recognize all of Richard Graves' children?)
The will of John Elyott of Bishops Stortford, dated 22 Oct 1557,
names wife Margaret and leaves her "my lease of the tythe and pasonage of Storford" during her widowhood.
To son Rowland he also left the lease of Parson's Mill."
To every child of daughters Agnes Pylston, Blythe Hanes, and George he have one ewe and one lamb.
(This suggests how his descendants became mercers.)
It appears to be unknown who were the parents of his children. Or atleast unproven.
First wife died in 1521/22. Fiske has his breakdown.

They had the following children:

1-Rowland Eliot Born: Abt 1525
Died: 13 Nov 1576 - Bishops Stortford, Hertfordshire, England
2- George Eliot
3- -Edward (1546-1595)
4- Blythe Eliot
5- Winifred Eliot
6- Agens Eliot
7- Tabitha Eliot
8- Alice Eliot

Edward ELLIOTT Born in 1546 in Newlandshall, Essex, England. Edward died
in Roxwell Church, Essex, England on 29 Dec 1595, he was 49. Edward married
Jane GEDGE born 1555, daughter of Jonas GEDGE Born abt 1516 and wife born about 1518.

They had the following children:
1-Bennett Elliott(1573-1621)
2-George Elliott (1575-)
3-Jane Elliott(1576-)
4-Elizabeth Elliott
5-Dorothy Elliott

Bennett ELLIOTT. Born in 1573 in Wilferd Hertz, England. Bennett died in
Nazeing Essex, England on 21 Nov 1621, he was 48. On 30 Oct 1590 when
Bennett was 17, he married Lettice APGAR or Agar or Alger, in Nazeing Essex, England.

Notes on Bennett Bennet and Lettice (Algers) Eliot of Nazeing, Essex,
were parents of seven immigrants to Massachusetts between 1631 and 1640.
I'm getting his date of death from Nazeing parish register; assuming the same Bennett.
More extensions of the the serial article on Bennett's ancestry in NEHGR are forthcoming.
Article on Lettice Algers in NEHGR, 160, 2006, 181-84.
Series of three articles on Bennet Eliot in NEHGR volume 161, 2007.
He was born about 1580 at the latest; likely earlier since many men did not marry until well into their thirties.
After having several children baptized at Widford, he and Lettice moved to Nazeing, an Essex parish five miles to the south,
near Epping, Waltham Holy Cross, and Roxwell (places wehre several branches of the Eliot family had settled.)
Finally, BEenet's 1621 will names land in the Hertfordshire parishes of Ware, Widford, Hunsdon, and Eastwick.
The will of George Eliot of Bishops Stortford, dated 12 Jan 1548/9,
provies the basis for an understanding of the Eliot family.
Will names five living siblings.
Two wills that escaped notice of previous researchers,
identify Philip Eliot, a contemporary, of Hunsdon, and clarifiy ties between BEnnet and Philip.
First is that of Philip's father, John Eliot of Olives,
which names his brother Thomas Eliot of Widford, which names children, one of whom had land in Widford.
It was suspected that Eliot had family ties in Widford because easiest way to explain his having land there.
This Thomas, and Philip, were sons of Thomas Eliot of Wdiford.
Manor of Much Hadham rolls prove that Simon Eliot, third son of Thomas Eliot who died in 1551, was father of Bennet.
Bennet is a variant of Benedict.
To this Court is certified ... Memorandum that the third day of May in the 22nd year (1580_ of the reign of our Lady Elizabeth now queen...
John Adams and Jane his wife and Benedict Elliott the son of the same Jane came before the steward of the manor...
and Jane ... surrendered into the hands of the lord ...
one croft of land called Lechitthilles containing by estimation three acres
whether more or less parcel of the tenements of the lord...
lying within the demesne aforesaid,...
between the lands laterly Thomas Elliott by right of his wife on the southern side
and the lands lately Robert Patener on the nortehrn side...
there to which the same Jane was admitted for her life...
after the death of Simon Elliott her certain husband...
as shown in the court... the ninth day of April the fourth year (1562) of the regin of our Lady Elizabeth...
And that the same premises descend to Benedict by right of inheritance
after the death of the said Simon his father as shown by the rolls of court... Fine 18d paid.

John Eliot of Olives wrote a will dated 22 Apr 1585,
proved May 1585, naming his son Philip, named sons William, Jeffrey, Ferdinando.
John Eliot of Olives' brother, Thomas Eliot of Widford, dated 17 March 1557/8,
named wife Margery, brother Simon, children George, Thomas, Blyth, and Winifred.
Bennett must haVe been 21 on 3 May 1580 to claim his legacy, meaning he was born by 1859,
and he must have been living when his father died in 1562.
The Court Roll ID's Bennett's parents as Simon Eliot, died in 1562, and Jane, who remarried John Adams.
The only Simon Eliot so far identified in any of the records examiined for this family
was Simon the son of Thomas the 1551 testator.
The only man named Bennet or Benedict Eliot found to date was Bennet Eliot of Nazeing, husband of Lettice (Alger).
Philip and Bennet, first cousins, probably knew eaCh other well because
his only surviving uncle, John Eliot of Olives, played a significant part in his childhood.
In his 1572 will, Bennet Averell of Sawbridgewirth, Hertfordshire,
made a bequest of 20s to godson Bennet Aylet.
If this Bennet Aylet was Simon Eliot's son, Bennet Eliot,
it raises the possibility that either Simon or Jane ( ) Eliot was related to the family of Bennet Averell.
Bennet Averell's granddaughter, Elizabeth Sibthrope, married Philip Eliot

Lettice was Born in 1570. Lettice died on 16 Mar 1620, she was 50.
She was the daughter of Francis Alger-Apgar-Agar (son of Robert and Joanne Algore) and Lettice Peacock (daughter of Thomas Peacock)

the clergy. Rev John married Ann MUNFORD or Mountford in October of 1632.

following info from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Eliot_(missionary)

John Eliot (c. 1604 – 21 May 1690) was a Puritan missionary to the American Indians.
His efforts earned him the designation “the Indian apostle
John Eliot was born in Widford, Hertfordshire, England and lived at Nazeing as a boy.
He attended Jesus College, Cambridge. After college,
he became assistant to Thomas Hooker at a private school at Little Baddow, Essex.
After Hooker was forced to flee to Holland,
Eliot emigrated to Boston, Massachusetts,
arriving on November 3, 1631, on the ship Lyon.
There, he became minister and "teaching elder" at the First Church in Roxbury.
In that town he founded the Roxbury Latin School in 1645.
From 1649 to 1674, he was assisted in the Roxbury ministry by Samuel Danforth.

John Eliot and fellow ministers Thomas Weld (also of Roxbury) and Richard Mather of Dorchester,
are credited with being the editors of the Bay Psalm Book,
which was the first book published in the British North American colonies.
He participated in the examination, excommunication and exile of Anne Hutchinson, whose opinions he deplored.
He was instrumental in the conversion of Massachusett Indians.
To help achieve this, Eliot translated the Bible into the Native language and published it in 1663.
In 1666, his grammar of Massachusett, called "The Indian Grammar Begun", was published as well.
As a cross-cultural missionary Eliot was best known for attempting to preserve the culture of the Native Americans
by putting them in planned towns where they could continue by their own rule as a Christian society.
At one point in time, there were 14 of these towns of so-called "Praying Indians",
the best documented being at Natick, Massachusetts.
These towns were mostly destroyed by furious English colonists during King Philip's War (1675).
Although restoration was attempted, it ultimately failed.
The praying Indian towns included: Littleton (Nashoba), Lowell (Wamesit, initially incorporated as part of Chelmsford),
Grafton (Hassanamessit), Marlborough (Okommakamesit),
a portion of Hopkinton that is now in the Town of Ashland (Makunkokoag),
Canton (Punkapoag), Mendon-Uxbridge (Wacentug), and Natick.

Eliot was also the author of The Christian Commonwealth:
or, The Civil Policy Of The Rising Kingdom of Jesus Christ,
considered the first book on politics written by an American
and also the first book to be banned by an American government.
Written in the late 1640s, and published in England in 1659,
it proposed a new model of civil government based on the system Eliot instituted among the converted Indians,
which was based in turn on Exodus 18, the government instituted among the Israelites by Moses in the wilderness.
Eliot asserted that "Christ is the only right Heir of the Crown of England,"
and called for the institution of an elected theocracy in England and throughout the world.
The accession to the throne of Charles II of England made the book an embarrassment to the Massachusetts colony,
and in 1661 the General Court banned the book and ordered all copies destroyed.
Eliot was forced to issue a public retraction and apology.

John Eliot's wife was the former Hanna Mumford.
They had six children, five girls and one boy,
but only one of the children lived, the boy.
Their son, John Eliot, Jr., was the first pastor of First Church in Newton,
while his son, Joseph Eliot, was a pastor in Guilford, Connecticut,
and was himself father of Jared Eliot, a noted agriculture writer and pastor

In 1689 John Eliot donated 75 acres (300,000 m2) of land in Jamaica Plain
to support the Eliot School, founded in 1676. Under the donation,
the school was required to accept both Negros and Indians without prejudice,
a great exception for the time. The school survives near its original location to this day as
The Eliot School of Fine and Applied Arts.

He died in 1690, aged 85, his last words being "welcome joy!"
A monument to John Eliot is on the grounds of the Bacon Free Library in Natick.
Eliot is honored with a feast day on the liturgical calendar of the Episcopal Church (USA) on May 21.
