The Morris family is of Welsh origin and come from Ellystan Godydd,
a powerful British Chieftain who founded the fourth royal Tribe of Wales,
and who was born in 933 A.D.
The early name "Mawr Rwyce" means strong in battle.

distinguishing Christian name used in the Morris family---the family is
thought to have come from Leicestershire of London.
Much of the following is quoted verbatim from the book “The American
Heritage of James Norman Hall", by Robert Leland Johnson, 1968. A copy
is in the Denver Public Library.
"During the reign of Queen Elizabeth in the year 1600 at Reading, in the
county of Berkshire, England, a baby was born, later to be baptized
Anthony Morris, the First known bearer of a name that would be carried
down through the years and whose bearers would make monumental
contributions to the foundations of a new republic to someday be known a
s the United States of America.
When Anthony Morris was born on the banks of the Thames, below the
juncture with the Kennet River, William Shakespeare was at the apogee of
his playwright career and England enjoyed civil harmony under
Queen Elizabeth, who had reigned since 1558. Protestantism, which the Queen
espoused, had become the doctrinal basis of the Church of England and
Parliament had enacted it into law be carious acts between 1559 and
1563.
During the year 1588 the Spanish Armada was defeated off the coast
of England,
leaving England to replace Spain a The great colonizer of the
New world and as the superior sea power of the world. With this new
position as a colonial power, England took to the shores she colonized
the religion of the Church of England.
One of the first to enter into the spirit of these exciting times was
Anthony Morris--let me call him Anthony Morris I--who left his home in
Reading and emigrated to Barbados, ion the West Indies. There he began
the mercantile enterprises which were to occupy his family for
generations".
In 1630 Anthony Morris I became the father on Anthony Morris II who
became a mariner, dividing his time between residences in Barbados and
London, carrying on the business begun by his father.

Came to America 1639?...13 years later followed by brother Edward
Nicholas Morris 1st Morris to be citizen of the Americas
Commander Nicholas Morris was born in England in 1605 and died in 1664.
His wife Martha was born in 1609, and after Nicholas’
death she married Thomas Lane, a wealthy land owner of Northumberland Co.
She signed her Morris inheritance over to her son, Anthony, on 15 July 1665.
It is most likely that Nicholas came to Virginia in 1639;
his first daughter Anne was born in England that year, and
according to the will of John Upton he was living on land in James City County which Upton leased to him in that same year.
above info from http://maykensaw.org/twmorrisgenealogy.html
Nicholas and a number of other colonists, including Capt. John Haynie,
signed an oath to the Commonwealth of England on 13 April 16 52 :3
Wee whose names are subscribed doe promise & engage ourselves to be true & faithfull to the Commonwealth of England
as it is now established without KING or HOUSE of LORDES...www.jstor.org/pss/4245063
Nicholas patented 182 acres in Northumberland County, Virginia in November 1652.
He also patented 512 acres of land on the Great Wicomico River on 1 June 1654
a patent which was issued to him for the importation of 11 people to the colony.
His land was located next to that of John Hudnall.
Nicholas was a justice of the County Court from 1652 until he died in 1663
He and Colonel Mottrom were leaders of the settlement, now Coan, Coan Mill, etc.,
and among the justices who helped organize this county.
